'Boxy Lady' Bostonian

Post by Pete Fardell »

I've been making a new Bostonian to my own design. Not much designing entailed really though- I've just kept it to Bostonian dimensions, with a extra little to spare in the fuselage box, used a lot of straight lines and rectangles and made no real effort to make it look nice or to keep the weight particularly low. I just wanted a quick, easy build so as to have something vaguely appropriate to enter in the Bostonian contest at Clayton next month. Otherwise I'd have had to resort to flying The Chub again and for some reason that is not great in a duration contest!

(I'm calling it 'Boxy Lady' but someone tell me if that's been used before and I might change it!)

Your workroom looks very moody too ;)

Thanks Tim. My workroom isn't really quite as moody as that. I think the ipad camera must have censored out all the mess for me!

Framework now done, so here's a mockup. I made another tailplane as the first one looked a bit too small.
It's just under 12g as seen. I'm quite pleased at how perky it looks when all together- slightly better than the plug ugly crate I was expecting anyway.

Pete, looks light and charming.
I am sure it will fly nicely.

Thanks, Roman.
Covered now- awaiting steaming and non-shrinking dope. Pre-shrunk tissue on the tail to try and avoid warps.

Thanks Tim- about 13g at the moment. Dope, windows and motor peg will add a bit, but hopefully not too much. Are you you planning on going to Clayton on Saturday, and do you have a Bostonian in good order for the comp?

I am intending to go. I did consider building a new Bostonian but decided that I would just run out of time as usual! I have three but none are competitive (which is why I thought of building another). Dumbo, snout and the nieuport-beech Bostonian. Hopefully I will be trimming the Buster.

13g is good. Needs to be 14g anyway so hopefully you will be just over. Someone needs to challenge Tom!

All done with six days to spare! Finished weight is 14.7g, so safely over the minimum limit so long as my scales are right. It balances just behind the spar, which might change a little bit with rubber, but hopefully it won't need much weight added.
As for challenging Mr Tomlinson- I don't think so somehow, but it might do better than the Chub at least!

(I see Dave has a very nice looking new Bostonian on the Clayton gallery page.

Should be a fun day!)
